National Association of
Pediatric Nurse Practitioners
NAPNAP Clinical Expert Panel
The National Association of
Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) is accepting applications for the
Clinical Expert Panel. We are looking for individuals who are "recognized
leaders" in their area of expertise and have pertinent clinical
experience, and if possible some related research background in the area.
Participating individuals may
be offered the opportunity to participate in various avenues of public
education about children's health care and pediatric nurse practitioner
practice. Many practicing PNPs have gained personal exposure sharing their
expertise on topics for which experience and hard work have earned them the
right to be regarded as an authority by the media. Although we have many
experts identified, NAPNAP would like to expand our already effective media
outreach by adding to its pool of clinical experts.
If you are interested, please
complete the attached application and return to us for review. If a topic is
not listed or defined adequately, please add the topic or describe it in more
detail. A task force of NAPNAP board and members of the Communications
Committee will review all applications. Applications are reviewed
two times each year (May and
November). Inclusion is based on completeness of application, media experience
(desired -but not required!), nursing experience, and the need for experts in
the topic area chosen. Sending in the form does not obligate you to anything,
but it does tell the NAPNAP National Office
that you are willing to share
your expertise and would considered being contacted to respond to a request.
There are a few different
opportunities in which you may be asked to serve as a clinical expert. The
number of opportunities and requests received by NAPNAP varies each month. We
cannot guarantee that there will be activity in your identified area. However,
it is better to be prepared and have experts identified should an opportunity
arise. The various potential opportunities are described below.
Subject Matter Commentary:
Within this area, NAPNAP would volunteer your name to journalists seeking
clarification or experience-based commentary on a given subject for print
media. This activity usually requires a rapid turn-around time with tight
editorial deadlines. When a journalist contacts you, you will often
be expected to respond within
12 hours.
Author: This category is for
individuals who are experts in one or more fields who are willing to author
printed material published by NAPNAP. This may include writing articles for our
consumer publications (e.g. Baby Steps), providing content for NAPNAP
brochures, or contributing to a written core curriculum. This type of work is
usually done under the supervision of an editor, who provides direction on
content and format. The turn around time for this type of work typically varies
from two weeks to a month.
Media Spokesperson: This
category is for individuals who are recognized experts in one or more fields
and are able and willing to comment on camera (or radio) on current issues
related to children's health care or pediatric nurse practitioner practice.
Often media events are planned well in advance, but occasionally there is a
last minute request.
Organization Liaison: This
activity entails representing NAPNAP on a regional or national committee. It
includes participating in the committee activities on an ongoing basis or until
project completion. It requires that the liaison report back to the NAPNAP
Executive Board on committee activities. Such appointments require a
Presidential appointment, and occasionally Board approval.
The NAPNAP National Office
keeps a reference guide of all NAPNAP clinical experts for referral when a
request arises. Additionally, all clinical experts will be listed on NAPNAP's
Website in a section titled "NAPNAP Clinical Experts". This section
will allow requesting individuals, journalists, or organizations to search for
experts. Once included in the Clinical Expert Panel, experts will be requested
to update their application and vita every three years.
